Plans have been revealed this week for the monumental United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.
The grand event is set to take place at the Port of New York and New Jersey with festivities running from July 3 to 8, Sail4th 250, the non-profit organization leading the initiative, announced.
According to the organizer, the six-day highlight of the U.S.' Semiquincentennial will feature the largest gathering of tall ships and naval vessels from around the world. Nearly a dozen countries have already pledged to send their tall ships for the event, with many others invited by the U.S. Navy. More than 30 tall ships are expected to take part in the event that anticipates eight to 10 million spectators.
"America's prosperity is due in good part to the protected harbor of New York and New Jersey," Sail4th 250 president Chris O'Brien. "The Hudson River was a strategic stronghold throughout the American Revolution, while millions of immigrants passed through Ellis Island and the South Street Seaport."
The event will feature an international parade of tall ships, an international naval review attended by foreign government leaders, an aerial review led by the Blue Angels, fireworks, food festivals, an exhibition of historical documents, and free public access to the vessels at multiple harbor locations.
On July 3, tall ships will parade through the East River from upper Manhattan toward downtown. On the 4th, the parade will begin near the Verrazzano Bridge between Brooklyn and Staten Island, moving north through the Hudson River.
America's 250th tall ship parade route for July 3rd and July 4th, 2026.
The amount of people is set to be impressive. Not only the 250th anniversary will attract onlookers, but the event will coincide with the FIFA World Cup games. On July 5th, for instance the Met Life Stadium is set to host a semi-final match.
"Together with our partners, we look forward to welcoming travelers from around the world in 2026," said Julie Coker, president of NYC Tourism + Conventions.
"The extraordinary gathering of tall ships and naval vessels in our harbor will be a testament to our city's role as a beacon of opportunity and underscore New York City's contributions to American history, culture, and more," she added.
